Now in its eighth year, the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival expands to three days. It is one of the most stunningly located festivals in the world, a polo field in the middle of the desert flanked by rows of palm trees, all baked in Californian sun.

Approximately the same size as Reading Festival, two main stages dominate the site with three extra tents alongside. Everything is meticulously planned and put together and it can feel like dinner at the White House compared to some of its British equivalents.

It also has a tradition of booking some of the world's biggest bands, with Radiohead, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, and Blur all playing in recent years. Coachella also has a proven track record of reuniting bands to play at the festival and pulling off the odd headline grabbing surprise. It was partly responsible for bringing Pixies back together in 2004 and persuaded Madonna to perform in 2006.

So don't forget your camera - or your sunscreen - but remember it gets pretty cold at night! Camping is available but most people opt for motel accommodation.less
