The Strongbow Rooms @ V Staffs

It's not the most auspicious start this weekend as Strongbow's regular disc spinner Kris Bones
gets word to the Rooms that he's stuck in traffic. Yet, this slight glitch doesn't appear to be bothering the thirsty
mob surrounding the already busy bar.
It's not long before Bent's Simon Mills and Nail Tolliday come to the rescue. The Nottingham duo who count Aussie film-diva, Nicole Kidman, amongst their fans successfully indulge us in a typically hectic house set. They veer from progressive to deep and funky before annihilating the dance floor with Massive Attack's sublime classic, 'Unfinished Sympathy'.
Charlotte Home AKA Lottie then takes to the decks and selects a glorious stack of festival tunes
for the near-capacity crowd. Plastic glasses are unsteadily held aloft whilst others perfect their best Shaun Ryder shuffle
to 'Dare' until Snoop and Pharell take the party off the scale with 'Drop It Like It's Hot'. There's a deep-electro tinge
later in proceedings with the classy, catchy refrain from Juliet's 'Avalon' and new Mylo mash-up, 'Dr Pressure'. All in all,
it's an astounding, appropriate set from dance music's first lady.
Cue today's late arrival, Kris Bones, who dishes up a serving of guaranteed floor-fillers from Blur's 'Song 2' to Faithless' 'Insomnia'. But there's an even bigger reception lying in wait for one of tonight's most anticipated acts, the brothers Plump, Lee Rous and Andy Gardner. Their break-tastic take on tunes is one of 2005's hottest sounds and tonight's set roars along with thundering momentum. Their own recent compositions including Acid Hustle and Soul Vibrates are unleashed along with other current breakbeat faves from Lee Coombs and Freestylers.
Things quickly get messy as we introduce dapper Strongbow headliner, Justin Robertson, to the
joys of nitrous oxide via balloon before he enters the booth clutching his beloved bag of obscure techno. We do the only decent
and proper thing and conclude Saturday night in the company of Justin's skewed tech-house heaviness. It's just a shame that
what should be a 3am set has to be hammered out before the obscenely early curfew of V kicks in.
