You set out with the best intentions: 'Meet me @ bk of Glade nr icecrm van 1am'. You know where you're going, who you're meeting, and when. But as the vortex of the festival site swallows time and the country air (among other substances) alters reality, meeting up with mates is never as easy as it seems, or is it?
Strange twists of fate reuniting long lost buddies are particularly frequent. Our message board community is brimming with stories that make it hard to dispute that there really is magic at work on the Worthy Farm site. Judge for yourself...
'Olvar' recalls how a series of coincidences led to several reunions: "I was driving down in convoy with a mate and we got separated in a massive traffic jam on the A303. Nearing the festival ground I was wondering how I was going to find him again when I saw another one of my mates standing in the car park of a Little Chef, so I pulled over. We soon had a five-car convoy of friends who'd all set off from opposite ends of the country, but all randomly ended up at the same Little Chef within ten minutes of each other." Later on at the festival, Olvar also bumped into a friend he'd met whilst travelling, as well as someone he'd been to school with!
'Funkydrummer' recounts a heartwarming reunion witnessed whilst queuing for food: "A bloke at the front of a queue shouted across to another bloke at the front of an adjacent queue. Turned out these guys had been best friends at school about 25 years ago and hadn't seen each other until then, in front of a stall!"
Whilst using the men's urinals near the Pyramid Sage, 'Dorlomin''s brother spotted one of his best mates from school. "The thing about it was," Dorlomin says, "We went to school the 80s... in Africa!".
During the Make Poverty History Moment, 'Tess Within Tent' witnessed more than just hundreds of people
joining hands. As the crowd hushed in the Green Fields and people began to form human chains, a couple walked up from the
market area and, due to the quiet, asked if anyone had lost a wallet. The bloke next to Tess said yes and it really was his
wallet. "Everyone cheers and laughs," she tells us, "And says yeah, make poverty history!"
'Sir
Thomas Mogwai' tells of how he sold his car two months before the festival in the local Nottingham paper. On the way
to the festival, after taking a wrong turn and ending up in Glastonbury village, his old car drives straight past him, same
number plates and rust patches! "That's when my Glasto started last year," he enthuses, "Felt so right, like
I was most definitely in the right place at the right time."
Another message board member shares a story that could have had a disastrous ending: "After buying my ticket, I discovered that my PhD viva had been scheduled for the Wednesday after Glastonbury," he recalls, "I was incredibly nervous about it and felt totally unprepared, but hadn't been to Glastonbury for 14 years so couldn't miss it even for something as important as that." Rupe decided to leave the festival on the Sunday evening, and spend Monday recovering and Tuesday revising. After resolving not to drink in order to be able to drive home, come 7 o'clock, Rupe got a little carried away and couldn't bring himself to leave. Whilst packing up on Monday morning, a phone call came from his boss saying that because of a planned tube strike, the viva had been postponed by ten days. "Not only did it save my PhD... but more importantly, can you imagine how I'd have felt if I'd left Glastonbury early for no reason!?"
'Dimlocator' reminisces about her mate Dave who started to pine for his kids on Sunday night and wanted to go home. Trouble is, he was the group's lift back! They reluctantly packed and left for the car. Dimlocator realised that a bag full of 'pressies' had been left behind and trekked back to get it. Designated driver got the hump and said he was leaving anyway. It seemed there would be little hope of catching up with them. In tears, Dimlocator met a kind stranger who offered to share her blanket and suggested they look down the road in the car park. The friend's car wasn't there so Dimlocator turned back. "Upon turning back... onto the road I was on, was Dave's car. I flapped my arms like a silly bugger, he pulled over and let me in. It truly is a magical place."
