Crazy Coincidences at Glastonbury 2007

United Kingdom United Kingdom | | 29 June 2007

The most common phenomena involve bumping into friends in completely random places (often when you've arranged to meet them but have lost contact), bumping into people you haven't seen since your school days and losing valuable possessions only for them to 'magically' find their way back to you.

The following true stories were posted by Virtual Festivals readers:

'FrostyPaw' writes: "With 50,000 people camped by Wednesday, my mate Alex rang us to find out where on-site we'd pitched our tents. Incredibly, it turned out that his tent was about five metres in front of ours!"

James Thresher writes: "I Bumped into a mate of mine on the Friday. He just happened to be wandering through our camp, I didn't even know he was going. Turns out he was only camped about eight tents away!"

Emily - front rightDanny writes: "After becoming seperated from my friends on Saturday I ended up down the very front of the Pyramid waiting for The Killers. I had been squashed up against this girl called Emily and a guy named Phil for a couple of sets and we got chatting. Anyway, we asked a security guard to take our picture and Phil ended up putting this photo up on Facebook. Last night I got a Facebook message from a school friend, Emily (different Emily) asking if I was at Glasto because she just saw a picture of me standing next to her friend Phil. So all the time I was squashed at the front with a few randomers I was actually squashed next to a friend of a friend. Here is the picture. If anyone knows who Emily is (front right) or her friend in glasses behind her on the right, let me know! Im the one to the left of the girl in the glasses on the far right and Phil is at the barrier in grey."

'PotKettle' writes: "Whilst walking through the Other Stage audience while Modest Mouse were playing, I saw a friend of mine who moved to Cardiff four or five years ago, who's number I'd lost and feared I'd never see again. She was an absolute inspiration to me all those years ago and we had one of the longest hugs I've ever had. We've now swapped numbers and are planning to meet up in London."

'Bag For Life' writes: "I phoned up one of my friends at The Other Stage during The Chemical Brothers' set whilst walking along and before he'd answered I walked right into the back of him! We had been searching for each other all festival!"

'MKGirl' writes: "I bumped into an old school friend who I hadn't seen for years on Thursday, then proceeded to bump into her every day at different places around the site!"

'Can't Wait' writes: "I tapped someone on the shoulder to ask for a light whilst watching Paulo Nutini on the Pyramid Stage. When they turned around, it was someone I knew and hadn't seen for years!"

'Beefy Koala' writes: "A man near us was pissed off about losing his jumper. As he was talking about it, someone walked passed wearing it. When the man asked him for it back, it turned out he had found it in the stone circle the night before. Weird."

'Sim 667' writes: "I was trying to meet up with a guy called Rowan, but his phone wasnt working, so I tried a bloke I knew he was camping with called Henry. I got through to Henry and had a conversation about Rowan. I decided to go and meet Henry and when I got there it turned out to be a different Henry that I'd gone to college with four years ago who just happened to be at Glastonbury and also happened to be camping with a guy called Rowan!"

'February Star' writes: "My mate and I were at the front of the Other Stage when he randomly started talking about Warburton's bread (wierd, I know!). We then started shouting "Mr. Warburton!" in large crowds to see if anyone was actually called that and by the end of the festival we were both calling each other Mr. Warburton. I got home last night and decided to watch some of the bands I'd missed on the BBC website. I decided to have a look at the Calvin Harris set and what should be dangling from his belt but a loaf of Warburton's bread! Spooky!"

'Fearless Fish' writes: "My girlfriend and I got chatting to a couple on the coach down. We said our goodbyes when we got off the coach and set about trying to find our friends. After travelling back and forth around the campsites we finally pitched out tent. Next morning we got up to find we'd pitched our tent right next to the people on the coach! We got on really well with them which was nice."

'Pasty B' writes: "On the Sunday in 2005, sat in our spot to th

e rear of the Pyramid field there were these three kids messing around in the mud, chucking it at the police, making a "mud dog", generally larking about and we took a photo of them and their mud dog. Now I look at these photos regularly, so when I saw the EXACT same kids sat directly in front of us again on the Friday in 2007 I couldn't believe my eyes. What made it even more crazy is that they were sat directly in front (not to the side, or behind) of us for the Saturday and Sunday, in completely different places!"

'Tia Maria' writes: "Having been separated from my pals, I wandered up to see The Men They Couldn't hang at the Acoustic Stage (who were just great btw) and was thinking about my best pal Julie from school (with whom I discovered the band and used to drunkenly sing their songs) when I was nearly knocked over by a woman making her way to the front of the crowd ... and it was Julie! I hadn't seen or been in touch with her for about 10 years and there she was. We hugged and cried and sang together the nI had to head back to the JP stage for a shift and didn't take her number but it was just meant to be."

Crackers 1 writes: "I'd just bought my evening meal from one of the veggie stalls when I spotted a girl in the queue who looked vaguely familiar. I realised that she was someone from a band forum that I read and post on quite a lot. I'd seen her photo on the forum two or three times but had never met her although I had helped her write her CV via e-mails between us. When I spoke to her to see if I was right she looked very surprised that a total stranger knew her name. I was pretty amazed that I'd recognised someone I'd never met before from a photo amongst 178,000 people!"

Virtual Festivals chief Steve has his own tale from this year to share:

Steve writes: "I can happily say that I've now joined the Losing & Reuniting With Valuables Club. My pear cider high came to a sudden crashing end on the Wednesday night, when I reached into my pocket and found an empty space where I knew my wallet was supposed to be - with all of my cash for the entire festival. With it being Glasto, I quickly had scores of people I'd never met on their hands and knees with me, with torches, scouring the expansive field, helping me find it. Alas it was not to be found at this time, and I retired to bed on a first night downer. The next morning, I awoke to the sound of rain and a hangover of pain. Then I remembered I'd lost all my money and just wanted to go home! Just then, as if by magic, came the most wonderful noise I'd ever heard. A campsite steward was walking around outside my tent, asking if anyone had lost a wallet last night. Although we were miles from JazzWorld (where I thought I'd lost it), I instantly knew it was my wallet she had, and low and behold it came back to me, complete - of course - with all of my cash. It turned out that I had actually dropped it in the campsite where anyone could easily have surrepticuously pocketed it under cover of darkness. I was one happy camper that morning!"
