The lead singer has suggested that anything short of the top slot for his band would be a farce.
When XFM asked
the Lancashire-born songwriter if he thought the recently reformed outfit should headline Glastonbury he
said: “I think it would be a travesty if we didn’t.”
Ashcroft went
on to defend his comments by saying: “We’re one of the few bands that can jam without sounding like Lynyrd
Skynyrd on a bad night, so we can actually take people on a proper journey, rock n roll wise.”
Glastonbury’s
co-organiser, Emily Eavis, was in attendance at one of the band’s Camden gigs last week which has further
fuelled the speculation they will perform at the event for the first time since 1995.
Ashcroft’s sensational
remarks have put The Verve on a growing rumour list which
already includes Radiohead, Blur, Kylie Minogue and Muse.
